I am not sure what to think about this article–I was waiting for the second half, where the writer encountered a moment of self-discovery, coming to some realization that competitive running, even at the highest levels, is a competition against oneself.
Just because you “train” or call yourself a “runner” gives you no ownership over the physics of distance, time, and velocity. Believe me, I realized this face when I was a highly motivated high school 2-miler, training through the winter and into the spring. Fresh from the basketball team comes Otis, skinny and tall, and he runs away from me in the first 2 miles raced in his life, mostly based his natural, inherent speed, God bless him.
Neurotic comes to mind…..
